Congratulations to Dr. Michael Law, winner of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Achievement Award for Overall Excellence - Early Career.

Dr. Law was very successful in terms of knowledge translation and policy impact from his work on generic drug prices. Dr. Jane Buxton wins 2012 James M. Robinson Award

Dr. Jane Buxton has won the 2012 James M. Robinson Award, for significant contributions to public health. Dr. Buxton was presented with the award at the Health Officers Council of British Columbia meeting last week.

She has formed a durable bridge between the domains of public health practice and education and there is no important area of public health education that she has left untouched. I feel that she deserved to receive this award years ago, and that the only reason she could not was that she was, in her own fashion, busy managing and adjudicating the awards to the benefit of everyone else!"

Congratulations, Jane!

Housing for Canadians in Need
In 2008, the federal government allocated $110 million to develop the At Home/Chez Soi project. This project involves people who have been homeless and living with a mental health issue in Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver. Over 2,000 homeless people are participating. An interim report (2012) provides significant evidence about the impact of a Housing First approach. Evidence shows that Housing First can be implemented across Canada; improves the lives of those who are homeless and have a mental illness; and makes better use of public dollars - as demonstrated by a reduction in use of hospital in-patient care, emergency rooms, police detentions and justice services.

Economic Action Plan 2013 proposes $595 million over 5 years to the Homelessness Partnering Strategy using a 'Housing First' approach. Building on the successful At Home/Chez Soi project, the Government will continue to work in partnership with provinces and territories, communities, the private sector and other stakeholders, such as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, to reduce homelessness.

In Vancouver this project is administered by SPPH's Dr. Jim Frankish, UBC Psychiatry's Michael Krausz and Julian Somers from SFU Health Sciences.

Congratulations to all involved
