Industrial Hygiene Primer for Environmental Health & Safety Personnel

This series of courses is designed for those new to, or without formal training, in the industrial hygiene / occupational health and safety field. Audience includes entry-level health and safety personnel, industrial hygiene technicians / technologists, safety managers and others who wish to gain a greater understanding of the science and practice of industrial hygiene.

Goal:

To offer a series of courses on fundamentals of industrial hygiene practice to enable those with responsibility for health and safety in the workplace to expand their current industrial hygiene knowledge and develop some hands on exposure monitoring skills. This course series is not intended to qualify participants to be industrial hygienists.

Overall Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of all of the courses in this series, course participants will be able to:

  • Define industrial hygiene and explain the role industrial hygienists play in workplace health and safety.
  • Recognize potential health hazards in occupational settings.
  • Know and understand applicable occupational health and safety regulations and guidelines related to industrial hygiene.
  • Understand routes of exposure, and basic toxicology terms.
  • Understand basic exposure assessment sampling strategies and assessment techniques for common hazards.
  • Understand how to select and work with laboratories.
  • Know how to interpret sample results.
  • Understand exposure control options, and how to evaluate and compare exposure control options
  • Communicate with management and workers about risks
  • Know when to consult with an industrial hygienist.

Note: 

Enrollment in course 3 (part 2) without having taken course 2 (Part 1) is only by permission of the instructors c/o UBC SPPH Continuing Education director. This is because course 3 (the part 2 of Sampling and Monitoring of Workplace Hazards) focuses on hands-on, lab-based instruction.  Didactic teaching will have mostly been done in its Part 1 counterpart, scheduled for November 18, 2013.
