A resident of Canada, Alex Berland holds a Diploma in Nursing (Selkirk College, 1976), BScN (University of British Columbia, 1986) and MSc (UBC, 1988). He operates a management consulting company that specializes in health and social services, in education and in community development. He is also Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, UBC, and a Registered Nurse in British Columbia. Alex also serves as Senior Adviser in Health Sciences at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology in Dhaka Bangladesh.
Alex has many years experience as a Registered Nurse and senior executive. During 2000-01 Alex was a senior civil servant in the UK Department of Health, working closely with Ministers and responsible for hospital policy for England. Previously in British Columbia, Alex was appointed by the Minister of Health as chief executive to lead two regional hospitals out of crisis situations, and to direct the provincial psychiatric hospital (800 beds) through a major renewal while also implementing the government’s mental health reform plan. From 1992-97, Alex was Vice President responsible for all clinical programs at one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals (1200 beds) during a period of restructuring and renewal. Prior to this Alex worked as a staff nurse (pediatrics, medicine, rehabilitation, geriatrics), nurse educator, supervisor, and Director of Nursing Services.
Since 2001 president of his own consulting firm, Alex leads teams in reviews, strategic planning and service redesign. His Canadian projects have covered all aspects of health and social services, from policy reviews and developing provincial-level strategy to executing operating plans and team coaching in sites as varied as health authorities, social service Ministries, rural hospitals, teaching hospitals, primary care networks, Aboriginal health services, mental health teams and academic groups. He has worked with clients internationally in nursing education, large-scale organization change, knowledge transfer and health care futures.
Alex also has many publishing and presentation credits for peer-reviewed and popular work. His current research interests are health human resource development, especially in Less Developed Countries, quality assurance in higher education and implementation of health policy.
