Admissions Requirements

Admissions Requirements:

Applicants must meet both the minimum requirements set out by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and by the Master of Health Science program. Meeting the minimum criteria does not ensure acceptance into the program – most successful applicants have more/higher than the minimum.

Degree and GPA

All applicants must have an MD or equivalent (e.g., dentistry or veterinary medicine).

In addition, applicants must have a degree that is academically equivalent to a UBC 4-year Bachelor’s degree or a designation of equivalent status approved by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The GPA is calculated based on all third and fourth-year level coursework and must be at least a B+ average based on the institution’s grading scale.

English Proficiency

No English proficiency is required if your academic credential originates from Canada or the United States.

Quantitative Skills

All applicants must meet our quantitative admission requirements. This can be provided in two ways:

  1. Taking an approved undergraduate statistics or mathematics course within the past ten years with at least a B+ grade. This must appear on your official transcripts that you submit for your application.
  2. Take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and obtain a minimum score of 153 on the verbal component and 153 on the quantitative component. The test must be taken within the last five years to be accepted. An equivalent, standardized test may be also be accepted, but you need to contact us for approval.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A detailed and up-to-date CV that highlights your academic and work history, and note any relevant research or related experience (e.x., courses, employment, volunteer work), and publications.

Letter of Intent (LOI)

Applicants are encouraged to be specific in their letters of intent and clearly detail your career objectives, your research interests and how the MHSc program will meet your career goals. Please avoid duplicating the information in the LOI with the details of your CV. The LOI must not be more than 700 words.

Reference Letters

Applicants are required to have three reference letters as part of their application. The letters should directly address your ability to excel in a fast-paced, learner-focused graduate program. We prefer at least two academic reference letters. The MHSc program accepts electronic references from referees who have institutional email addresses. If a referee wishes to send their reference via mail, it should be typed on official letterhead and sent directly to the MHSc Program Office from the referee, in sealed envelopes counter-signed on the envelope flap. Referees who are unable to access the Graduate Studies online application site and/or complete the online reference form can either write their own letter and/or download the reference form, and submit a hard copies directly to the MHSc office.

Applicants with international credentials must have academic backgrounds that meet the minimum requirements outlined by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for the country of origin of the credential(s). The GPA is calculated on all courses taken for the degree.

English Proficiency

TOEFL or IELTS is required of all applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction. The test must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application. You may upload your copy of your test report or self-report the scores. These scores are considered unofficial until the official scores are received by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at UBC directly from the testing agency. Acceptable English language tests and submission of these results are detailed onlineThe minimum TOEFL score is 100 and the minimum IELTS score is 7.0 (no component score lower than 6.5). If you received a degree from a university where the language of instruction is English you DO NOT require a TOEFL or IELTS score. You can prove this by having your official transcript indicate that the primary language of instruction was in English or having the institution send an official letter stating that the primary instruction was in English.
