As we embark on a new academic year, we are thrilled to welcome both new and returning students to the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) at the University of British Columbia. Under the guidance of Dr. Aslam Anis, our Director, we are reminded of the importance of the work we do and the values that guide us.
At SPPH, decolonization, equity, and inclusion are integral to everything we do. Situated on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Musqueam First Nation, we are committed to understanding and enhancing Indigenous cultural awareness at all levels. We strive to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all our learners, staff, and faculty.
With a full range of academic programs and world-class research that bridges multiple disciplines, SPPH is known as one of the best places in Canada for public and population health experts to train, learn, and grow. As Dr. Anis emphasized, there has never been a greater need for schools that provide training opportunities in public and global health. This year promises to be filled with learning, growth, and endless possibilities as we welcome you into an environment where curiosity is nurtured, ideas are celebrated, and challenges are embraced.
Whether your focus is on professional practice, research, or academia, our degree programs have produced distinguished leaders in population and public health both locally and globally. From tackling infectious diseases to addressing the impacts of climate change, the need for skilled public health professionals has never been greater. As SPPH students, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our work and community environments remain safe and healthy through the implementation of equitable and evidence-based best practices.
Once again, welcome back! Let’s embrace the opportunities that lie ahead and make this a truly exceptional year at SPPH.
