We are pleased to announce that Dr. Amy Salmon has been appointed Director, Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes (Advancing Health), effective to March 31, 2031.
Dr. Salmon is a clinical associate professor in the School of Population and Public Health and Director, Clinical Faculty Affairs. She has also served as the Centre’s Associate Director since 2020.
Dr. Salmon leads research initiatives focused on the development and evaluation of health systems and services that support people with complex health and social care needs, including mental health and substance use services. She is also leading positive change for older adults across British Columbia in her role as the inaugural Conconi Family Foundation Distinguished Scholar in Seniors Care.
As Director, Advancing Health, Dr. Salmon will lead and shape the Centre’s research strategy, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting faculty, trainees and staff in conducting high-impact health outcomes research across diverse clinical areas, populations and social determinants of health. She will continue to strengthen the Centre’s partnerships with health authorities, government and communities, as well as with local and global collaborators, to advance knowledge translation and enhance healthcare policy to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Salmon’s appointment follows the leadership of Dr. Aslam Anis, who served as Director from 2007. Under his 18-year leadership, the Centre has evolved from a small research unit supporting HIV studies into a globally-respected interdisciplinary research hub, producing influential work in health economics, clinical trials, patient outcomes and substance use research.
Dr. Anis also played a central role in the expansion of the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network, where he continues to serve as Co-Director. This national research program, based at the Centre for more than two decades, supported over 130 clinical trials with more than 12,000 participants, and fostered inclusivity, collaboration and mentorship, with many former trainees now serving as healthcare leaders in B.C. and around the world. We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Anis for his many years of service and celebrate his enduring legacy in advancing health systems, patient care and high-impact research.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Salmon on her appointment and thanking Dr. Anis for his leadership and contributions to the Centre.
