Dr. Trevor Corneil appointed Assistant Dean, PGME, Engagement & Regional Support

The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is pleased to share that Dr. Trevor Corneil has been appointed Assistant Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), Engagement and Regional Support, in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, effective April 1, 2026.

This appointment represents the third and final Assistant Dean role within PGME’s refreshed leadership structure, completing the team that will guide postgraduate medical training across British Columbia.

Dr. Corneil is a Clinical Professor at SPPH and serves as a Medical Health Officer with Northern Health. He brings more than 20 years of experience in public health practice, physician leadership, and medical education across both urban and rural health authorities in British Columbia.

He has served as Program Director of UBC’s Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) Residency Program for over 5 years. In this role, he has supported residents and faculty through a provincial redesign and expansion of the program, including the addition of Family Medicine as an elective dual certification pathway. Dr. Corneil will conclude his tenure as Program Director June 30 of this year, to provide time for SPPH and PGME to identify a successor.

Dr. Corneil holds a Master of Public Health and Epidemiology from UBC and is a Fellow of both the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

In his new role, Dr. Corneil will provide leadership across several key areas central to PGME’s success, including distributed sites, regional engagement across the province (Fraser, Island, Northern, Interior, and Vancouver regions), the collective agreement, housing, the Basic Clinical Year (BCY), the educational environment, and partnerships with health authorities and external organizations. He will also support engagement with Simon Fraser University and undergraduate engagement.

“Please join me in welcoming Dr. Corneil as the new Assistant Dean, PGME, Engagement and Regional Support,” said Dr. Sonia Butterworth, Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education. “I look forward to the expertise and enthusiasm he brings as we work together to advance postgraduate medical education across British Columbia.”
