Welcome to the MPH and the School of Population and Public Health.
You are joining a distinguished group of graduate students. Here in SPPH, we create, share, and apply knowledge to protect and improve well-being and promote equity in the health of all people and communities, both within Canada and around the world.

New MPH student orientation

Get important information about the program, get a chance to meet one another, as well as meet the staff and faculty who have primary responsibilities for our program.
Once you’ve been admitted, follow these next steps for new students to the MPH Program.
1. Accept your offer
Accept your offer and pay the $250.00 CAD acceptance deposit (non-refundable and non-transferable). This deposit will be credited towards your tuition when you register for the program.
Instructions
In order to accept our offer and secure your spot in the MPH program, you will need to accept the offer online by clicking “Accept Offer” in your MPH application on the online application system, and pay a non-refundable deposit of $250.00 CAD.

2. Register for your courses
Please take a look at the program requirements page to find out which courses you will need to take.
To register for your courses:
- Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Student Service Centre (SSC) to register for your courses. You will also find video tutorials for the registration system.
- Your course registration is linked to Canvas, UBC’s online Learning Management System. Canvas houses course specific content (e.g. syllabus, readings).
3. Pay your tuition fees
Check your fee amounts and due dates and pay fees online through the SSC. Annual tuition fees are divided into three instalments, due in September, January and May. Your acceptance deposit will be applied as a credit against the first tuition instalment.
We have designed our MPH Program to be completed in two years. Annual tuition is paid in three instalments per year, and students will pay a minimum of six instalments.
4. Update your personal information
We need important information from you to ensure that program staff and faculty can contact you.
- You can add/change your personal information, including your preferred email and address, online at the Student Services Centre website anytime.
- Class lists, access to online resources, and grades are generated using an internal UBC database. Email will be the primary method of contact and access to most UBC systems are through CWL.
5. Attend a Graduate Student Orientation
- Orientation sessions are offered by the School of Population and Public Health and the Faculty of Graduate Studies - graduate student orientation.
6. Apply for BC medical insurance and Housing if you need it

If you are joining us from outside Metro Vancouver, there are many housing options to choose from.
Every person living in BC must enroll in the provincial Medical Services Plan (MSP). The plan covers the cost of basic medical care, including most physical and hospital services. It does not cover general dental care, eyeglasses or prescription medications. You should enroll in MSP immediately after arriving in BC. Please visit this link for more information.
- If you’re new to British Columbia, there is a waiting period of three months before MSP coverage begins.
- If you’re coming from another Canadian province, make sure that you are covered until your residency in BC has been established and you are eligible for MSP.
- If you’re an international student, you will be enrolled automatically in UBC’s mandatory health insurance for new international students (iMED) for your first three months. Further details can be found here.
