Appointment Policy and Rank Criteria

Clinical faculty appointments are governed by the Faculty of Medicine Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments (“Policy”) (Approved May 2, 2025).

Specific criteria and expectations for each rank are listed in Appendix A of the Policy. Examples of academic activities in the Faculty of Medicine that fulfill these criteria are described in the Guide to Academic Activities for Clinical Faculty.

An initial appointment can be at any rank, provided the criteria and expectations for that rank are met.

To be appointed as a Clinical Instructor (entry point), please submit:

  1. UBC Faculty of Medicine Application for Clinical Faculty Appointment
  2. Either a Curriculum Vitae in any format preferred (UBC Faculty of Medicine Clinical Faculty CV recommended) OR Record of Academic Activities

To be appointed at a rank of Clinical Assistant Professor or higher, please submit:

  1. UBC Faculty of Medicine Application for Clinical Faculty Appointment
  2. Curriculum Vitae in any format required (UBC Faculty of Medicine Clinical Faculty CV recommended)
  3. Evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., learner evaluations, peer assessments, or a teaching dossier). If teaching evaluations are unavailable, include a brief explanation.

To be appointed at a rank of Clinical Professor, please submit:

  4. Evidence of two most significant, impactful contributions, with descriptions of how they meet the criteria (e.g., publications, influence on policy/practice, curricular contributions). Exception: if you hold (or have held) an equivalent rank at another academic institution, this is not required.
  5. List of six potential referees with contact information:
