Dr. Aslam Anis appointed Director of School of Population and Public Health

A message from Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Vice-President of Health, University of British Columbia

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Aslam Anis has been appointed Director, School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), effective to June 30, 2029.

Dr. Anis is a professor in SPPH, where he has served as Director pro tem since 2021. He is also the Director of the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes (formerly the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences).

A distinguished health economist, Dr. Anis has achieved international recognition for his contributions to the fields of pharmacoeconomics, pharmaceutical industry regulation and drug pricing. In recognition of his research, Dr. Anis was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has received the Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Researcher Award. He also serves as National Director of the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network.

In his role as Director of SPPH, Dr. Anis will continue to advance the School’s priorities and support its world-class population, public and global health researchers and trainees who are helping to shape health care systems in Canada and globally. With a focus on respectful environments, equity, diversity and inclusion, he will foster a culture of transparency, inclusive dialogue and goal sharing among the SPPH community, improve access to respectful environments and anti-racism training, and continue efforts to address Indigenous engagement, recruitment and reconciliation. Dr. Anis will also continue to lead the development and launch of the Master of Global Health program to support local, provincial and national efforts to effectively respond to global health challenges, such as climate change, pandemics and inequities related to colonization.
