Master of Health Science (MHSc)
A Professional Degree Providing Strong Research Methodology Skills
Master of Health Science (MHSc) applicants must have an MD or equivalent, including dentistry or veterinary medicine, and will learn skills that can be applied to their academic and clinical interests, bolstering their research abilities and opportunities.
Students who have completed the MHSc have gone on to a wide range of careers, including Infectious disease specialists, data managers, and neurologists. MHSc graduates credit the program with giving them the skills to become better researchers, in turn, allowing them to find evidence-based solutions to complex health problems that are now helping people around the world.
In collaboration with the UBC Department of Psychiatry, we offer an MHSc degree with a focus on Psychiatry. In addition to the general MHSc requirements, students completing the MHSc with a focus on Psychiatry will complete two psychiatry-specific electives and a scholarly project as a major paper suitable for publication (the Major Essay). The scholarly project will be supervised by an approved faculty member of the UBC Department of Psychiatry. Applicants intersted in this focus should contact Dr. Daniel Vigo (daniel.vigo@ubc.ca) or Dr. Raymond Lam (r.lam@ubc.ca).

“With the MHSc, I became a lot more marketable – you’re a surgeon, but with a research background.”
