Dr. Rakel Kling and Dr. Mike Benusic receive the Jane Buxton Teaching Awards

Oct 30, 2023 |

Congratulations to Dr. Rakel Kling and Dr. Mike Benusic for being selected as the recipients of the Jane Buxton Teaching Award of 2022 and of 2023 respectively.

The Jane Buxton Teaching Award, started in 2004, is yearly recognition of a School of Population and Public Health or Faculty of Medicine faculty member at UBC for excellence in teaching and/or contributions to the training of UBC Public Health and Preventive Medicine (PHPM) residents.

Recipients:

2022 Recipient – Dr. Rakel Kling, Medical Health Officer, Northern Interior

“Residents have noticed the consistent contribution of this person to our program. They have been the primary Northern Health preceptor for several years providing excellent teaching and mentorship. She has provided considerable support to the program with presence at some academic days in teaching residents, providing direction to the program policy and support accreditation, providing an empowering style of precepting where the resident is given the opportunity to lead while having good supports, and for being personable – we feel like a colleague,” comments from public health residents.

2023 Recipient – Dr. Mike Benusic, Medical Health Officer, Island Health

“With humility, humor, and kindness, this individual has brought tremendously positive energy into our learning environment. Through their roles as preceptor, site lead, and selections committee member, they have demonstrated a deep commitment to our growth and development as public health physicians. From their uncanny use of GIFs to describe the public health experience, engaging academic half day presentations and exam preparation sessions/godly study notes to carving out time for mentoring and resident support, this individual has consistently reinforced the value that residents bring to public health and preventive medicine work,” comments from public health residents.

Congratulations again to both recipients!
