Unlearning Club

The Unlearning Club is a student-run and student-driven organization founded in September 2022. The Club provides a shared space for critical engagement with works by Black, Brown, and Indigenous thinkers on racism, White supremacy, and settler colonialism. Designed by students, for students, we welcome all SPPH members who value careful listening, honest dialogue, and deepening their understanding of these topics through collective discussion.

Originally developed in the Office of the Provincial Health Officer at the BC Ministry of Health, the Unlearning Club reflects our commitment as public and global health professionals to ongoing reflection, organized action, and equity-informed practice. By bringing this work into SPPH, students extend that responsibility into the academic community, and support future public and global health professionals in developing skills to advocate and mobilize towards undoing structural inequities in both our personal and professional lives. Within SPPH, the Master of Public Health program provides the club with logistical support, such as sharing messages with students and assisting with funding applications upon request.

Guided by the Learn, Understand, Act framework, the Unlearning Club emphasizes curiosity, context, and respectful questioning as foundations for accountability and responsible action. Here, we strive to co-create a space for students to critically engage with settler colonial institutionality and dismantle oppressive systems and policies as we navigate the world around us. We welcome all SPPH students who share our vision of collectively building a more just, reflective, and healthy society at large.
