Dr. Naveed Janjua, a clinical professor at the UBC School of Population and Public Health, has been appointed as the Director of UBC Centre for Disease Control (CDC) from June 1, 2024 to August 31, 2029.
Dr. Naveed Janjua is an epidemiologist and the executive director of Data and Analytic Services at BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). He is a medical doctor (MBBS) and holds a Master of Science (MSc) in epidemiology and biostatistics, and a doctorate in public health (DrPH). Dr. Janjua’s research interests include the study of infectious diseases (hepatitis B and C, COVID-19), health disparities, syndemics of psychosocial conditions, infections and chronic diseases, health outcomes, intervention effectiveness, health surveillance and program monitoring. His research has been influential in informing clinical and public health guidelines and policies.
Most of his current research is based on the BC Hepatitis Testers Cohort, the BC COVID-19 Cohort and the BC Mix COVID-19 Survey. He also leads Hepatitis Education Canada, a program that develops culturally and linguistically sensitive hepatitis C education resources for the population, hepatitis patients and health care providers.
The UBC CDC is a Senate approved Centre within FOM that is strategically integrated into the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to conduct and coordinate research, education, knowledge translation and policy development in support of provincial, national and international programs for public health control and prevention. Programs span many areas of infectious and chronic disease, as well as environmental hazards. UBC CDC’s mandate is to advance health research, teaching and public health policy by linking the academic and research expertise of UBC with the expertise and experience of public health professionals at BCCDC. As the provincial centre of excellence in research on the surveillance, control and prevention of infectious diseases and other public health threats, UBC CDC effectively links academia, governments, health organizations and the public in understanding and combating communicable, chronic and environment-related diseases.
