University of British Columbia research received a $23.2 million boost in support of 23 Canada Research Chairs working in medicine, psychology, engineering, biology and more. The Canada Research Chair program was established in 2000 and helps attract and retain top researchers in Canada.
UBC’s School of Population and Public Health garnered an unprecedented three new Canada Research Chairs, plus one renewal.
“The Canada Research Chair program strengthens research and helps draw leaders in every field to UBC,” said John Hepburn, UBC’s vice president Research and International. “Our professors are making new discoveries and developing new ideas that will change our world. We’re grateful for the support of this program.”
Dr. Jennifer Gardy Canada Research Chair in Public Health Genomics Dr. Jennifer Gardy’s research is focused on outbreaks of communicable diseases using genetic information, epidemiological data and clinical information with the goal of developing strategies to control and prevent infectious diseases. |

Dr. Michael Law Canada Research Chair in Access to Medicines Dr. Michael Law work focuses on access to and the use of prescription drugs, including the affordability of prescription drugs, private drug insurance, generic drug pricing, and the impact of pharmacist prescribing. Dr. Gina Ogilvie Canada Research Chair in Global Control of HPV-Related Disease and Cancer Dr. Gina Ogilvie has been influential in setting and directing health policy on reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, HPV screening, and the HPV vaccine, both in Canada and globally. Dr. Ogilvie joined the School of Population and Public Health, as a Professor, in April 2015. Most recently, she was Medical Director of Clinical Prevention Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control, and an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia in the Departments of Family Practice, Obstetrics & Gynecology. |

Dr. Martin Schechter Canada Research Chair in HIV/AIDS and Urban Population Health (Renewal) Dr. Schechter, Founding Director of the School of Population and Public Health, works with inner city populations who are at risk for HIV, hepatitis C, and overdose. As part of his research he is developing prevention programs for young Aboriginal drug users. He also works to stop the spread of HIV in Northern Uganda. |
