Dr. Silvia Stringhini honoured with Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar award

Congratulations to Dr. Silvia Stringhini, an associate professor of UBC’s School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), on receiving Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar award!

In the next 5 years, Dr. Stringhini’s research program will analyze data from population cohorts of different ages to understand the influence of social and economic environments on developmental and aging trajectories from early life to old age. It aims to identify factors that might protect individuals from the adverse effects of lower socioeconomic conditions on health and aging. This knowledge will assist in shaping and implementing targeted health policies to improve the health and aging trajectories of the population, thereby reducing health inequities and lessening the burden on the health system.

Dr. Stringhini joined SPPH and ELCHA (Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging) as an Associate professor in September 2023. She has served as the Head of the Unit of Population Epidemiology in the Geneva University Hospitals and Assistant Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland between 2018 and 2023. She is the PI or co-PI of several population-based cohort studies including the Bus Santé study and the SEROCOV-KIDS and Specchio cohorts. She serves in the scientific board of the Colaus and SKIPOGH Swiss studies.

“I am excited to be able to contribute to the research around the life course social determinants of aging trajectories using both Canadian and international data,” said Dr. Stringhini. “This award will help establish my research program in Canada after my career transition.”

Michael Smith Health Research BC is funding 23 new Scholars and 14 Health Professional-Investigators (HP-I), through the 2024 competitions.

The BC’s health research agency continue building on their legacy of talent development and research capacity building. Through these awards, they are expanding support to researchers across the province to deliver evidence to improve the health of British Columbians.
