Dr. Jane Buxton appointed to the Order of British Columbia

Aug 10, 2023 |

Congratulations to Dr. Jane Buxton on her appointment to the Order of British Columbia, the province’s highest form of recognition.

Dr. Buxton is among fourteen exceptional people receiving the Order in 2023. The honour is bestowed annually in recognition of outstanding provincial, national or international impact.

“This honour is a mark of excellence, reflected in the service and achievements of these incredible British Columbians,” said B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin. “Their accomplishments have left an indelible mark on their communities, and ensuing legacies will impact our province to the benefit of future generations.”

Dr. Jane Buxton has led an inspiring career as a faculty member with SPPH, as a physician epidemiologist, and as the former medical lead for harm reduction at the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Jane chaired the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons specialty committee for public health and preventive medicine which oversees residency training programs across Canada. In 10 years, she supervised over 100 students on placement at BCCDC and also supervised MSc and PhD students at SPPH – leaving a lasting legacy of capacity development for generations to come.

Jane engaged in quantitative, qualitative and participatory research with marginalized populations ensuring people who use drugs are involved in developing priorities for research, policy and harm reduction program evaluation. Among her many accomplishments, she developed the intersectoral Drug Overdose and Alert Partnership and the provincial Take Home Naloxone program which distributed over 1,000,000 naloxone kits and contributed to over 100,000 overdose reversals.

This year, 224 British Columbians were nominated. The new additions bring the total membership of the Order to 503. Members have been appointed from all parts of the province.

The Order of B.C. investiture ceremony for 2023 recipients and invited guests will take place at Government House in Victoria in the late fall.
