We ask questions about how communities of microorganisms that normally live within us (the human microbiome) are involved in the development and maintenance of health. We use next generation sequencing (metagenomics) and other technologies to learn about how the microbiome functions.
- Our current projects include:
- (1) investigating how the intestinal microbiome contributes to undernutrition and environmental enteric dysfunction in low resource settings
- (2) testing whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) will decolonize the microbiome of renal transplant patients colonized by highly drug resistant bacteria
- (3) examining resistance gene carriage in response to antibiotic use.
