Dr. Jerry Spiegel is a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health at UBC; and is co-director of the Global Health Research Program, a WHO Collaborating Centre in Occupational and Environmental Health. Dr. Spiegel was founding chairperson of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research and received the Canadian Public Health Association’s 2011 International Award. His research interests include the effects of globalization on health equity; understanding and addressing influences of physical and social environments on health through an ecosystem approach; and the economic evaluation of interventions. He has led a range of research and capacity-building projects in Cuba, Ecuador and South Africa. Dr. Spiegel has also been affiliated with the Liu Institute for Global Issues, where he was Director of Global Health; and was director of the Centre for International Health from 2003 to 2010; and was founding chairperson of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research and a founding member of the Canadian Community of Practice in Ecosystem Approaches to Health. Prior to joining UBC, he had 15 years of experience as a senior policy official with the Manitoba Department of Environment.

Dr. Spiegel’s research interests include effects of globalization on health, ecosystem approaches to human health, understanding and addressing influences of physical and social environments on health, global health and human security, economic evaluation of interventions, and health equity in Latin America.
