Class of 2015
2015 Robert Wood Johnson Recipient
Emergency Physician, Burnaby Hospital
Dr. Harpinder Paul Johar is a Clinical Instructor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is also the Burnaby Emergency Department UBC Site Leader for medical education. Paul is regularly involved in several quality enhancement initiatives throughout the hospital and lectures on patient satisfaction improvement strategies.
As his medical career has progressed, Paul became interested in the field of healthcare administration, leading him to pursue his Masters of Health Administration at UBC. Paul wishes to continually improve his abilities to work collaboratively with the numerous players that comprise the increasingly complex Canadian healthcare system. This is in the hopes of providing efficient, effective, and empathetic care to patients. His SPHA 590 research project focussed on fee-for-service and alternate payment models in Lower Mainland emergency departments. This work will contribute to the field of health care administration by helping to clarify what differences, if any, exist between emergency departments that use different payment models.
Looking back to the last two years, Paul describes his studies in the MHA program as an “academic awakening” and well worth the investment and effort.
