Meet our Alumni: Harjot Bedi
Meet Harjot Bedi, Master of Health Science graduate. Harjot is also an MD graduate and an Internal Medicine Resident.
What motivated you to apply for the MHSc program?
I have been interested in epidemiology and public health, and the UBC MHSc program seemed to allow the perfect balance of both of those fields, with excellent faculty and staff mentorship and support that made the program perfect, especially as a distance learning student engaged in my Internal Medicine residency full-time.
What was your favorite course taken during your degree and why?
I really enjoyed all the courses I took, but especially enjoyed SPPH 581K (Practical Knowledge and Skills for Working in Global Health) and SPPH 536 (Aboriginal Public Health in Canada: Ethics, Policy, and Practice). Practicing medicine in an international setting has always interested me. On a rural medicine rotation, the increased need of physicians and specialists in rural, Aboriginal communities became apparent. These courses were excellent in allowing me to explore the historical context of medical outreach work and the importance of critically exploring intentions and impact of that work (research or practicing medicine) to understand its benefits and harm in a community, both in the global and Aboriginal setting.
What advice would you give to future SPPH students?
I would highly encourage all students to step out of your comfort zone and take classes that allow you to think critically – about our education, role in society, and especially the difference in intentions and impacts. As a medical resident, it would have been easier for me to only take courses relevant to research or practice in medicine. However, exploring a variety of courses in Global health, Aboriginal health, Environmental health etc. made the last two years some of the most valuable in helping me grow both personally and professionally, and I recommend everyone to use this opportunity to do the same.
On the lighter side…
What is your favorite stress-relief tactic?
I really enjoy working out, whether its lifting weights or HIIT training. It allows me to set short attainable goals that allows the gratification that is often delayed when it comes to academia and advanced education at times. When I am feeling too stressed, a nice long trail run, such as in Pacific Spirit Park, is essential to dissociate and center before getting back to the task at hand.
What is your favorite study snack?
Ruffles all dressed chips. So glad I enjoy working out to balance out all those chips.
