Meet our graduate: Jessica Liauw, MHSc
Name: Jessica Liauw
Program: Masters of Health Science (MHSc)
Why did you take this program?
I pursued the Masters of Health Science program to enhance my knowledge and skills in epidemiology, statistics, and research methodology. The focus on these topics within the core courses, as well as the flexibility and variety of elective courses available, made this program a good fit for me.
What was the most valuable part of your program?
The most valuable part of the MHSc program for me was the opportunity to pursue courses which offered a wide variety of perspectives and approaches to health research. These perspectives have helped to inspire and shape my own research questions and strategies, in addition to enhancing my clinical practice. For example, a decision analysis course helped me to understand how a new clinical practice guideline could enhance shared decision-making for patients and healthcare providers. Courses in participatory research, ethics of evidence-based medicine, and social determinants of health, challenged and expanded my understanding of traditional health research and clinical conventions.
What’s next for you?
I will be completing a research fellowship over the next year, and then will be working as a Maternal Fetal Medicine physician. Alongside my clinical practice, I plan to engage in research to improve the care of women during high-risk pregnancy.
