Dr. Charuka Maheswaran (she/her/hers) is an award-winning family physician with global experience working in the U.K., New Zealand, Malawi, Tanzania and Canada, in remote, rural and urban settings. She is currently a Public Health and Preventive Medicine Resident Physician and recently completed her Masters in Public Health from University of British Columbia.  She received her medical degree from at Newcastle-upon-Tyne University, U.K. She has further qualifications in family medicine from the UK and Canada, medical degree equivalent in Canada, Diplomae in Tropical Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Reproductive Health. 

With an interest in policy, equity and inclusion, she was founding Chair of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice and Vice-Chair of Comox Valley Division. She was Vice-President of the BC College of Family Physicians; on committees and working groups with Doctors of BC, where she led the work on incorporating Diversity and Inclusion; and she is now part of the Core at RCCBC where she chairs a committee and is part of a resiliency working group. She was presented with Doctors of BC long service recognition awards in 2019 and 2022 and profiled in 2020 by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and BC Gender Equity Office and in 2021 by UBC School of Population and Public Health.

Dr. Maheswaran’s interests and passions include Anthropology, Archaeology and languages including Spanish. She was on the Dean’s Honour Roll for these subjects. She is also a qualified English teacher and is fluent in German.
