About the presentation
Public health responses centred on intensification of testing and treatment have reduced transmission of viral hepatitis and HIV in British Columbia (BC) in recent years. However, these strategies do not address the underlying inequities that sustain epidemics of Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI). As evidenced by the recent rapid surge in syphilis transmission among heterosexual people in BC, failure to address underlying inequities may limit the long term success and sustainability of ‘test & treat’ strategies. This presentation will introduce Dr. Bartlett’s program of research to the SPPH community, outlining previous work identifying inequities related to STBBIs, and ongoing work to address these.
About the presenter
After completing her PhD in Medicine at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, Dr. Sofia Bartlett completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC as a CIHR and Health Research BC funded Health System Impact Fellow. In 2021, she took up a position at the BC Centre for Disease Control as the Senior Scientist for STBBIs, and currently serves there as the Interim Scientific Director for Clinical Prevention Services. Dr. Bartlett leads a diverse program of applied public health research that aims to develop and implement person and community-centred public health responses to STBBIs.
