Human Early Learning Partnership – 20 Years of Data: EDI Wave 8 (BC Summary)
Join Dr. Mariana Brussoni and other HELP faculty and staff to reflect on what Early Development Instrument (EDI) data are revealing about the state of child development in BC. Accompanying the release of the BC Provincial Summary of Wave 8 EDI data, this webinar will provide an overview of highlights of data collected between 2019-2022, as well as trends across two decades of EDI data collection in the province. Attendees will also learn about areas of research that HELP faculty and affiliates are pursuing, providing some insight into the factors associated with these trends.

After the webinar concludes, the Provincial Summary will be available on the HELP website as an online, interactive report exploring Wave 8 data (collected between 2019-2022), as well as trends across two decades of EDI data collection in the province.
For the first time, the Provincial Summary will report the full distribution of children’s developmental outcomes measured by the EDI, identifying the percentage of children who are on track, in flux and vulnerable on their overall development. Using these new reporting metrics, EDI Wave 8 data reveal that almost half of children (45.4%) are on track on all five scales of the EDI, 32.9% are vulnerable on one or more scales, and another 21.8% are in flux.

Frustratingly, Wave 8 is the fifth provincial EDI data collection in a row where more than 30% of children are vulnerable on one or more areas of development important to their future success in school and beyond. And, of those vulnerable on the EDI, almost 20% are vulnerable on two or more of the scales.
